I am a fellow of the Youth Plug-in initiative, which gathered 36 youth chosen from across Europe, Africa and the Diaspora, to work together on key issues within the thematic clusters of Business, Job Creation and Entrepreneurship; Education and Skills; Peace and Security; Governance and Political Inclusion; Climate and Environmental Preservation; and Culture, Sports and Arts.
My journey started at the The 4th Africa-Europe Youth Summit, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire in October 2017. This event brought together 120 young people, selected from over 7500 applicants, to discuss common challenges faced by youth in both continents. These discussions were then met with suggested solutions, and formalised into one youth declaration.
The fellowship and experience culminated at the 5th AU-EU Summit in Abidjan 2017. The overarching theme of the Summit was ‘Investing in Youth for a Sustainable Future’, and as fellows we worked together over the 7 total weeks in identifying common deliverables to be brought forward for State Leaders at the 5th AU-EU Summit and beyond. The work of the 7 weeks materialised in the final youth agenda that was presented to head of states of both continents. This Youth Agenda can be found here
Across the weeks we met and conversed with leaders, organisations, institutions and businesses in Addis Ababa, Brussels, Luxembourg and Abidjan. My work was within the Business, Job Creation and Entrepreneurship Cluster, where I drove for change towards agro-ecological farming practices, and better recognition for the power of arts and culture in economic empowerment and cultural preservation.
